DBS checks for pharmacies - Everything you need to know

Pharmacists are vital in society for helping people live healthier lives by providing correct medication and expert health advice. This is why it is so important to ensure we’re hiring the best people for the role. DBS checks are vital in ensuring you are recruiting the right people for the role.

Pharmacists And Pharmacy Technicians - DBS Checks

Pharmacists/pharmacy technicians will engage in regulated activity because they provide healthcare to adults and children.

Regulated activities are the activities that the Disclosure and Barring Service can bar people from doing. It is a criminal offence for a barred person to seek to work, or work in, activities from which they are barred.”

It is an NHS regulatory requirement for pharmacists/pharmacy technicians to register with the General Pharmaceutical Council. Anyone registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council is classed as a healthcare professional. This means that they will be eligible for an Enhanced DBS check with the adults’ and children’s barred lists.

Dispensers And General Pharmacy Assistants - DBS Checks

If a Dispenser/general assistance supervises someone completing regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults daily, they will need the same level of check as the person they’re supervising. If they aren’t supervising staff but they are providing advice to children or adults over three times in thirty days, they will need an enhanced DBS check with a check on the children’s barred list only.

Pharmaceutical Delivery Drivers - DBS Checks

While people employed by a pharmacy or volunteering are not required to have a DBS check, it is good practice for pharmacy's to request a basic DBS check. After all, you want to make sure that you can trust the people you’re working with. However, if a delivery driver would need to handle drugs, they would be eligible for an enhanced DBS check and be required to register to the Controlled Drugs Licensing System.

Other pharmacy employees - DBS Checks

Staff who work in a role that has the potential for regular contact with people receiving healthcare can apply for a Standard DBS check.

Anyone over 16 who doesn’t have frequent contact with customers will be able to apply for a basic DBS check.
