Basic DBS Checks: Everything you need to know.

Some employers will request you to complete a basic DBS check as a part of their recruitment process. If you're applying for a job that requires a basic DBS check, it is important to know what will be included in your certificate.

Basic DBS checks will only show convictions that are not 'spent' e.g some types of cautions will disappear after three months. The checks will not disclose any convictions which are spent, cautions, fixed penalty notices or allegations.

If you do have unspent convictions, the check will give details of:

  • The date of the conviction
  • The name of the court you appeared in
  • The offence committed
  • The date of the offence
  • The sentence received

You or your employer on your behalf (with your consent), can apply for a basic DBS check. Please note, you must be over the age of 16 to apply for a check. It will normally take around 14 days to receive the certificate.
