Do I need planning permission for my home improvements project?

Are you looking to make some home improvements?

If you’ve fallen onto this page, there’s a good chance you are, but you’re unsure if you need planning permission for your chosen project. We aim to give you as much information, guidance, and resources to help answer some of the most common questions.

If you’re planning to build from scratch, make improvements to a listed building or planning a large extension, then you will need planning permission.

However, for smaller home improvements, it is likely you can complete these under Permitted Development.

Please note, it is very important to always check with your Local Planning Authority to ensure you do not require planning permission, as in some cases Permitted Development rights may have been restricted/removed.

To find out more about whether you need planning permission for your project then please visit the Planning Portals’ website. They provide interactive guides and a common projects page that can help you research your improvement project and figure out whether you need planning permission.
