Do nannies need DBS checks?

A nanny is a person who provides childcare. Nannies usually provide care within the family setting and form close bonds with the children they care for. The job involves providing a safe, fun and stimulating environment, doing nursery and school runs and providing meals.

If you’re looking to become a nanny or if you’re looking to hire a nanny, you may be wondering whether they need to have a DBS check or not. Nannies are expected to care for children unsupervised, so they will qualify for an Enhanced DBS check with the children’s barred list.

They must be checked before hired. It is not only illegal to not have a valid DBS check, but it also puts the children being cared for in danger. It is recommended that nanny agencies request an Enhanced DBS check before the nanny starts working with a family.
